Genghis Con 2016

I'm so excited to be heading back to Cleveland for this year's Genghis Con. I missed it last year, but got to experience Short Run up in Seattle instead. But Cleveland holds a special place in my heart, and I'm really looking forward to being back and seeing all my friends.

This year I'll have the all-new part four of the five part series, The Seeker. I will also have some other comics and woodblock prints for sale.

Also I'm excited to say to I'll have a comic in the new issue of Lake Erie Monster, with John G. and Jake Kelly!

Watercolors for Cora

In April I got to meet my niece, Cora, and give her these paintings for her room. When my sister and I were growing up, we had a picture on the wall of a cutaway view of a house that showed all the rooms and the people inside. I always liked this picture, so I decided to make my own version for Cora. 

Sorry for the bad photos. As usual, I get too excited about framing them and forget to scan.

                        I took this photo and then later added a few more details to the yard scene.

I love watercolors, but they can be a hard medium. I tend to go light, not using as much paint as I should. I need to practice more! While making these I tried to channel Bill Watterson and his amazing watercolor skills. Maybe one day!

Campaigning

So excited at the opportunity to exhibit and participate in Seattle's comic festival Short Run this fall. So nervous at the prospect of maybe not being totally prepared (again.)

Decided to try my hand at crowdfunding. So far, just over $100 raised, which is over and above what I expected.

The campaign ends September 7th- only 21 days. Nervous and excited!

Short Run would be my first west coast comic convention, and also my only convention I'll attend this year, if the campaign works out. Fingers crossed!!

overdue sketch dump

Punk died the day someone said "Punk's not dead."

These days, I have to drive a good ways to and from work. This gives me a lot of thinking time.

Today I blasted Jay Reatard as I sped through the redwoods, and reminisced about the ol' college days. I used to be grimy, punk, a smoker, fucking art school kid, you know? I realized that I'm still p. grimy but i'm not that punk anymore. I miss going to shows and drinking shitty beer and staying out late in dive bars. I miss that energy. Like that time I saw the Plain Dealers and the lead singer got hit in the head with a glass bottle and started bleeding all over the place. He ran his hands over his face, then started bumping, slamming his body into the people immediately surrounding him on the floor. He came at me, swiped his fresh blood across my chest, then fell into the crowd of dudes next to me.

Far from being upset, I cracked up laughing because it was awesome.

Leaving that show with beer and sweat and dirt and blood crusted onto my skin, I felt like my life had been lifted past the mundane, shitty existence I was leading. My stupid life of art school critiques and smoking too many cigarettes and worrying about BOYS. So many boys. I fell in love with everybody because everybody was so interesting. I wanted to forget myself in other people. 

I can't even think about art school that much. I want to make a formal apology to anyone who had to sit through a critique of anything I made before my fourth year. It wasn't until then that I even figured out what kind of art I wanted to make. I wasted so much time just completing assignments that I never even tried to make something that I myself would like. 

My BFA final result was a silent comic about Jewish mysticism. I take the books out of their protective pillowcase once or twice a year to gaze at the eight months of my life that went into making those books. They are still precious to me. As are my sketchbooks. Everything else, from three years of work, is pretty much garbage. Sucks, right?

Is my mid 20's crisis happening? (is that even a thing?) I spent a good 8 minutes today considering bleaching my hair blonde. Like, really. Eight minutes. Do I even care that much? I don't even know.

But as I sit here, fervently typing, fervently drinking wine, listening to Crass for the first time in months, I feel like it doesn't really matter what I do either way. And that is the moral of this story, I guess.

Finally updated the website! The labelled categories should make it a little easier to navigate now. Since my website has been on display in Columbus Alive, I figured I might as well make it readable, ha. So now viewers can read Adventures of Moon Pie and The Seeker (part one) in their entirety. And they're available for purchase online, through PayPal!

Read Nate Powell's Swallow Me Whole. One of the best comics I've read in a long time. Also, very excited for the Bill Watterson and Richard Thompson show at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum! Two of my favorite artists. Can't wait.

SPACE was good. Met a lot of talented, interesting people. Conventions are also good for getting my head moving on more comics:

I am not the type of person who can keep up with drawing, scanning, and putting up new comics everyday. but I should keep trying to draw everyday. I've been looking over Cartooning by Ivan Brunetti, and he has some good exercises and interesting thoughts about cartooning and drawing. I'm on the ball. I did my taxes.
